Matching the Drum to the Door

Not every spool on a torsion shaft is interchangeable. Drum diameter, cable groove, and left/right hand determine how much cable winds per revolution. Installing the wrong size leaves the door short of the header or stacking cable off the drum face.

Type A

Standard residential drums

Most single and double doors across Vaughan and Toronto use four-inch or five-inch class drums sized for typical seven-foot and eight-foot openings. Cables nest in a spiral groove and stack neatly as the door rises into the horizontal track. Wear shows first as polished flats in the groove or as a cable that climbs the drum rim instead of staying in the flute.

High-lift drums

High-lift track raises the door higher before it turns horizontal, clearing tall vehicles or ceiling storage. The drums change how cable pays out relative to the vertical travel, so a standard drum cannot simply be swapped onto a high-lift shaft. We measure the existing drums and track before ordering replacements for Markham and Mississauga high-lift installs.

Low-headroom drums

Low-headroom systems use special drums and dual-track hardware when ceiling clearance is tight. Cable wind paths differ from standard residential drums. Mixing parts from a standard kit into a low-headroom door is a frequent DIY mistake that leaves one side short of cable and the bottom section tipped.

Set-Screw Failure

When the Drum Slips on the Shaft

Each drum locks to the torsion shaft with set screws that bite into the steel. Vibration, incomplete torque from an earlier repair, and shaft flats that have been chewed smooth all let the drum rotate independently of the spring. One side of the door then loses cable wind while the other side still lifts — the classic crooked-door look that often gets blamed on the opener alone.

Retightening alone is not always enough. If the set screw tip has rounded a hole in the shaft, we may need to rotate the drum to fresh steel, replace a damaged drum, or address bearings that let the shaft walk. Forcing the opener with a slipped drum stretches cables and can kick rollers toward the track flange.

A new cable on a scored drum will fray again. A new drum with an old frayed cable will cut a fresh groove in weeks. We treat the lift path as one assembly when wear shows on either part.

Soft cast drums develop sharp edges where cables have sawed into the groove. Left and right hands must stay correct, and both drums on a residential shaft should match diameter and style. We also verify that cable stops seat fully in the drum pocket so the end cannot pull free under load.

Install, torque, and wind

New drums lock to the shaft with fresh set-screw torque on clean steel. Cables seat in the pockets, wind evenly, and the springs are rewound to the correct turns for the door weight.

Level and cycle test

We confirm both bottom corners sit level, cables stay in the grooves through full travel, and the opener force settings are appropriate. You get a written summary of parts replaced.

If the door came off the track during the slip event, we complete realignment in the same visit when rollers and track are still serviceable. Springs that have lost cycle life may be recommended for replacement at the same time so the new drums are not fighting a tired counterbalance.
