We pull the red release cord so the trolley disconnects from the door. Standing clear of the path, we lift the door by hand to roughly waist or chest height and let go. Springs that are correctly wound hold most of the door weight at that point — the door stays put or drifts only a few centimetres.
If the door crashes toward the floor, the springs are under-tensioned or worn out. If the door shoots upward into the open position, the springs are over-wound. Either condition means the opener has been compensating — and motors were never meant to lift a full residential door alone.
