What the Sensor Lights Are Saying

Most residential openers put a small LED on each photo-eye. That light is the first diagnostic tool we use — before a single screw is turned. Brands differ in colour, but the pattern of solid versus blinking is remarkably consistent across LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman systems we service from Vaughan through the GTA.

A solid LED on the sending unit and a matching solid response on the receiving unit usually means the infrared beam is crossing the doorway cleanly. If the door still will not close, the problem may sit elsewhere — travel limits, force settings, a failing logic board, or a wall-button short. We still verify sensor height and lens clarity so a marginal beam is not masking a second fault.

Getting the Beam to Meet

Photo-eyes must sit at the same height, face each other squarely, and stay free of mud, salt film, and cobwebs. In the GTA winter, road salt kicked up by tires coats the lenses within weeks. A door that worked fine in October can start reversing every evening by January for no reason other than a cloudy lens.

    Match the mounting height

    Both brackets should sit roughly six inches above the floor, or at the manufacturer’s marked height. One sensor kicked higher by a snow shovel is a classic Vaughan winter complaint.

    Clean before you twist

    Wipe both lenses with a soft cloth. Adjusting a dirty sensor first wastes time — the blink often clears once light can pass cleanly again.

    Tighten after the LED goes solid

    Loose wing nuts drift overnight. We lock the brackets only after a solid light holds through several open and close cycles, including a block-the-beam reverse test.

    Watch afternoon sun

    Direct sunlight into the receiving eye can mimic a blocked beam. We may reposition the receiver or add a small shade so seasonal glare does not repeat the fault.

When Alignment Is Not Enough

Sensors talk to the opener through a thin two-conductor cable. Staples driven too deep, rodents in the ceiling joists, and corrosion at the terminal screws all interrupt that conversation. Here is what we inspect once the LEDs refuse to cooperate.

Terminal polarity

Many openers are polarity-sensitive. Wires swapped at the logic board or at the sensor leave the LED dark even when the cable is intact. We confirm colour coding against the opener label before replacing any hardware.

Staple cuts & nicks

Cable run along the track often gets pinched by metal staples. A nick that looks harmless can short the circuit when humidity rises. We replace damaged sections rather than taping over a known weak spot.

Bracket flex

Bent or cracked plastic brackets let the eye bounce every time the door closes. Vibration knocks a previously solid beam out of line. New rigid brackets restore a stable mounting plane.

Sensor pair failure

When metering shows correct voltage but no LED response, the photo-eye pair itself has failed. We install a matching replacement pair, program nothing extra, and retest reverse behaviour before leaving.

Under UL 325, residential garage door openers sold for North American use must reverse when the photo-eye beam is blocked during a close cycle. That requirement exists because a closing door can injure a child, a pet, or anyone crouched under the panels. A blinking LED usually means the sending and receiving photo-eyes are not aligned, the lens is blocked, or the beam path is interrupted. If the safety sensors cannot confirm a clear beam, the opener is designed to reverse the door near the floor. Misalignment, dirty lenses, sun glare, or damaged wiring are the most common causes.
