How the System Works

The Cable Path From Bracket to Drum

On a torsion system, each lift cable starts at a bottom corner bracket, runs up beside the vertical track, and wraps onto a cable drum at the end of the torsion shaft. When the spring unwinds during opening, the shaft turns the drums, and the cables wind in — lifting both sides of the door together.

That relationship means a cable problem is rarely only about the wire. A cracked drum groove can chew a new cable. A weak or broken spring can overload one side until the strand fails. An off-track door often follows a cable that slipped or snapped mid-cycle. Our technicians trace the full path before they cut any wire.

Understanding the path also explains why DIY “stringing” attempts go wrong. The cable must seat in the drum groove at the correct starting wind, with equal free length on both sides, before spring tension is restored. A few millimetres of mismatch shows up as a crooked door on the next open cycle.

Wear and Fray

Aircraft cable is made of many thin wires twisted into strands. Each open–close cycle bends those wires around the drum. Over years — often 7,000 to 15,000 cycles on a busy household door — outer wires nick, rust, and break. Once a few strands open, the remaining wires carry more load and the failure accelerates.

Road salt tracked into the garage, condensation on uninsulated doors, and dry winters without lubrication all speed corrosion. A cable that looks “fine” from across the room can show broken wires if you inspect the drum wrap and the bottom few feet near the bracket.

Spring Imbalance

Springs do the heavy lifting. Cables only transfer that force to the door corners. When one torsion spring weakens, breaks, or is wound incorrectly, one cable takes a larger share of the door weight. That overloaded side stretches, climbs the drum, or snaps while the other cable still looks usable.

Drum Set-Screw Failure

Each cable drum locks to the torsion shaft with set screws. Vibration and temperature swings can loosen those screws. When a drum slips, the cable loses its timed wrap — it may jump the groove, bind against the end bearing plate, or unwind on one side only. The door then racks hard enough to bend track or pull rollers free.

7×19 aircraft cable — seven strands of nineteen wires each. Flexible enough to wrap drums repeatedly without the stiffness of 7×7 cable used on lighter hardware.
Common diameters
1/8 inch for most single and standard double residential doors. 3/32 inch appears on lighter builder doors and some older extension-spring systems. Diameter must match the drum groove; the wrong size climbs or binds.
Breaking strength
Properly rated 1/8" 7×19 galvanized aircraft cable carries several thousand pounds of breaking strength — far above the static door weight — because dynamic loads spike when the door starts, stops, or hits an obstruction. We size cable to the manufacturer’s drum and door weight, not to a guess.
Finish & fittings
Galvanized wire resists GTA moisture better than bare steel. Factory or swaged stop fittings at the drum end, and secure retention at the bottom bracket, keep the cable from pulling through under load.
Why matched pairs
Both cables stretch and fatigue together. A new cable paired with an old one creates different stretch rates, uneven drum timing, and a crooked door within months. Safety-matched pairs keep left and right lift equal from day one.

Extension-spring doors use cables differently — often with pulleys and stretch cables — but the same rule applies: replace both sides, verify spring safety cables, and test balance before reconnecting the opener.

Cable Work Is Not a DIY Job

Lift cables sit in a system that stores hundreds of pounds of spring force. Releasing that force without winding bars, door clamps, and the correct cable size can cause the shaft to spin freely, the door to drop, or a winding cone to strike with enough energy to cause serious injury. Online videos that show “simple” restringing often skip the parts that go wrong on real doors with worn drums and uneven springs.
