Why Garage Door Tracks Fail

Tracks rarely fail on their own. Something pushes, pulls, or loosens them until the steel path is no longer a true rectangle. Understanding the cause decides whether we straighten, re-anchor, or replace a section — and whether related hardware must be replaced at the same time.

Backing into a partially open door is the classic track killer. The bottom section transfers force into the vertical rail, flaring the flange or putting a hard crease where rollers must pass. Cable or spring drop

When a lift cable snaps or a torsion spring fails, one side of the door falls while the other stays supported. Rollers slam sideways against the flange and can bend the vertical track outward. Loose lag bolts

Settlement & freeze

Garage openings settle. One jamb can shift relative to the other so a track that was plumb at installation slowly leans. Winter ice at the threshold or packed grit in the channel shoves the door sideways on the first lift of a cold morning, especially when the verticals were already out of parallel. Look along the wall. A growing shadow between the vertical track and the jamb, or a rail that is not parallel to its twin, means brackets have moved. Parallel spacing is what keeps rollers centred in both channels.

How We Set Tracks True Again

  1. Secure the door and disconnect the opener

We recheck spring balance, reconnect the opener, verify force and travel limits, and run multiple open-close cycles. The door should travel level, quiet, and stop cleanly without scraping the flange.
